The uchigatana is the nihonto (Japanese-style sword) equivalent of a longsword, used by common cavalry and foot soldiers--whereas the samurai caste would employ the katana.

Of a similar size to the katnana, the uchigatana is used in a similar fashion--and, as such, may be paired with a tanto or wakizashi to form a daisho.

Author's Note: This weapon was previously identified as the straight-edged ninjato. Using the identity of the ninjato to fill a percieved gap in Pathfinder's nihonto was fairly innacurate. Mechanically, the ninjato is merely a short sword (which has already been implied by the weapon proficiencies of the Ninja class).
